There are several subspecies of Boa constrictor, and all of the Boa ssp are listed on Appendix II of the CITES (Convention on the International Trade in Endangered Species). Additionally, Argentine Boa (Boa constrictor occidentalis) is on CITIES Appendix I - endangered - and requires permits to buy, sell, trade and own.
Boa constrictor is a non venomous boa species and found in Central America, South America and some islands in the Caribbean. All subspecies are referred to as boa constrictor, while the nominate subspecies, Boa constrictor constrictor, is often referred to specifically as the red tailed boa.
Boa constrictors are primarily nocturnal, active at dawn to dusk. Their habitat ranging from the high cloud forests to the dry low lands, sometimes boa constrictor can be found near human settlement due to the quantity of rodents. They feed on a wide variety of animals in the wild, including amphibians, lizards, birds, mammals and other snakes.
With average size of 10 ft on adult snake, boa constrictor lifespan is up to 30 years in captivity. They are ovoviviparous, females give birth to live young that average 15-20 inches (38-51 cm) in length.
